Los Angeles Korean American Community Leaders Urged Fast
Ratification of Korea-US Free Trade Agreement
On July 30, 2008, Korean American community leaders
joined together to voice support for the pending Korea-U.S. Free Trade
Agreement (KORUS FTA), and urge the House Committee on Ways and Means
and the US Congress to swiftly pass and ratify the KORUS FTA.
In barely forty years, South Korea has risen from war-ravaged poverty to
become the 11th largest economy in the world. South Korea is the 7th
largest trading partner of the United States with over $80 billion in
annual trade volume, the 6th largest market for U.S. agricultural
products, and the 3rd largest destination for U.S. foreign direct
investment in the Asia Pacific region.
If pass, the free trade agreement with Korea would be America’s largest
and commercially most significant FTA in more than a decade. The KORUS
FTA will benefit both the U.S. and Korean economies with virtually every
U.S. state having a stake in the expanded bilateral trade and investment
relationship. Specially, the agreement will benefit Americans by
creating more high paying jobs, bring economic stimulus, increase the
economic welfare by over $25 billion, protect US intellectual property,
and bring transparency that will assist US firms operating in Korea.

Joseph Cho Participated in 63rd Anniversary Celebration
of Korea
Independence Day
In
cooperation with the Korean Tennis Association in the United States, the
Cerritos Korean Tennis Club hosted the 63rd Annual Korean
Independence Day Tournament, which was held at Cerritos Regional Park on
August 17, 2008. For the first time, tournament participation was open
to all cultural communities in Southern California. City of Cerritos
Mayor Jim Edwards, Councilmember Joseph Cho, City of Irvine Mayor Pro
Tem Sukhee Kang, and Irvine Councilmember Steve Choi attended the award
ceremony and spoke about their
support of the event celebrating multicultural unity.
On the evening of August 15, 2008, at a Radio Korea sponsored candle
lighting demonstration in Los Angeles, Councilmember Joseph Cho
expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Japanese government’s decision
to mention the dispute over the Dokdo Islet in a Japanese Ministry of
Education document called “Commentary to the Curriculum Guideline.” The
mention of the inlet in the Japanese government publication essentially
violates the status quo that has been in effect since the end of World
War II which recognizes Korean Sovereignty over the islet.
Councilmember Cho also emphasized that Korean American
should be involved in more activities, and discuss Korean issues with
our neighbors and politicians on continual basis, rather than as a
reaction to current events.
