Joseph Cho Participates in the SEIU
15th Annual Keep LA Running Charity 5K/10K Run/Walk

On July 13, 2008, Councilmember Joseph Cho joined track and field legend Mary Decker Slaney and 1936 Olympian and World War II hero Louie Zamperini in kicking off the 15th Annual Keep LA Running charity 5K/10K Run/Walk. Cho also presented medals to the top finishers at the award ceremony held at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Ray. More than 2,000 runners, walkers and bicycle riders, including Joseph Cho’s wife, Lucy, and his son, Tony, participated in the day’s event. The event included the charity run, Kids Dash, Fun Coastal Bike Cruise, Mayor’s Walk, and a variety of activities before and after the races. Participants enjoyed a pre-race aerobic warm-up led by the Lakers Girls and the day was capped by a barbecue, music and raffle drawings.

The event was organized by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721 that represents over 80,000 county and city employees across Southern California as well as employees of special districts and publicly funded non-profits such as health clinics. LA County Federation of Labor Executive Secretary Maria Elena Durazo and many elected officials joined Councilmember Joseph Cho in the award ceremony, including State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, State Board of Equalization member Judy Chu, State Assembly members Mike Eng and Anthony Portantino, Los Angeles City Councilmember Bernard Parks, City of West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang, and Pasadena City Councilmember Jacque Robinson.

Over the years, Keep LA Running, one of oldest and most popular distance running events in Southern California, has raised over $1 million for its beneficiary charities and other non-profit organizations such as LA County special Districts Employee Disaster Relief Fund, the Harbor UCLA Medical Center, the American Cancer Society, and the Kids with Cancer Foundation. Major sponsors of Keep LA Running included the LA County Federation of Labor, Colonial Supplemental Insurance, PacifiCare, Kaiser Permanente, Union Bank of California and United Way.

Cerritos Celebrates America’s
Independence Day and Receiving
the 2008 All-America City Award

Approximately 11,000 Cerritos residents celebrated the 232nd birthday of the United States of America at the City of Cerritos’ 35th annual Let Freedom Ring Celebration held on Friday, July 4, 2008 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Cerritos Civic Center. The Celebration included food and game booths, a classic car exhibit, entertainment by California Dreamin’, rides, and a formal ceremony which included Cerritos Council members ringing a replica of the Liberty Bell. Cerritos Received a 2008 Best of LA® honor
and American Society of Landscape Architects Award

“Los Angeles” magazine presented the Cerritos Library with a 2008 Best of LA® Award for the “Best Library for Children” and published an article about the Children’s section of the Library in its July edition. The magazine previously selected the library for the “Best Public Library” honor in 2003. The Cerritos Library is also noted in many publications about libraries, such as the book written by the head of the Danish Library Association and the Internet list of the top 25 most modern libraries in the world.

The new Cerritos Library has been open for over six years, and the initial buzz among architects and librarians that came with the opening is still going strong. During the American Library Association annual conference held in Anaheim at the end of June, the ALA sponsored tours of the Library to its more than 300 librarians attending the conference. Since the tour, the Library received many emails, thank you cards and letters from many groups from far and wide such as representatives of Saudi Arabia, the Danish Library Association, the National Library of Singapore and South Korea.

On July 24, 2008, the American Society of Landscape Architects presented an award to the Cerritos City Council in recognition of the outstanding professional achievement of the Cerritos Sculpture Garden. The Garden is situated at the Cerritos Civic Center and offers a delightful setting for the City’s growing collection of public artwork. The Air Disaster Memorial, designed by artist Kathleen Caricof, pays tribute to the victims of the air tragedy that occurred when Aeromexico Flight 498 and a small private aircraft collided in the skies over the City of Cerritos on August 31, 1986. The Garden’s collection also includes the Statue of Freedom, a 7-foot replica of the bronze statue located atop the dome of the nation’s capitol in Washington D.C., and the Elements collection which represents the four elements of nature, Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. A new sculpture, the Mirage by artist Ted Schaal of

Loveland, Colorado will be added to the Garden this fall.

LA Convention Center Record
18,482 New USA Citizens Joseph Cho Volunteer for Voter Registration Drive

New immigrants are getting their American Citizenship throughout the country, particularly in Los Angeles. On July 11, 2008, a record crowd of 18,482 immigrants took the oath of citizenship at the Los Angeles Convention Center. New citizens hailed from over 100 countries. With 7770 immigrants, Mexico leads the pack, followed by 1,882 immigrants from El Salvador, 1,477 from the Philippines, and 612 from South Korea.

Los Angeles normally has two ceremonies with about 6,000 people each. A local record for the number of people sworn in one day reflected a 350 percent increase in citizenship applications last summer before immigration fees jumped from $400 to $675 on August 1, 2007. On top of that, Spanish-language media, including Univision and Telemundo, launched massive campaigns to encourage more immigrants to become citizens and vote.

Maury Martinez, 32, who was born in El Salvador and emigrated 14 years ago, said “I want to vote. It’s time we take action to shape the way the country is being run.” Voting is a key reason people of all nationalities choose to become citizens. Voter registration tables were set up inside the ceremony hall by immigration officials and

outside the hall by the Los Angeles Democratic Party and several community organizations.

Councilmember Joseph Cho volunteered alongside 60 other Democrats for the voter registration drive in support of Democratic presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

Nordstrom Will Expand at Los Cerritos Center

After years of vacancy, the former Robinson's-May site at the Los Cerritos Center will reopen in the spring of 2010 as a two-level, 138,000-square-foot Nordstrom department store – representing an increase of 20,000 square feet from its current location. The existing Nordstrom store will remain open for business during the construction, providing a seamless transition to the enhanced Nordstrom Experience at the Los Cerritos Center. Complementing the new Nordstrom will be 36,500 square feet of new in-line shops, which will create a new interior shopping court. The City of Cerritos played a key role in securing a new Nordstrom and shops.

Joseph Cho Was Invited to Neighborhood Meeting, Sponsored Korean Community Round Table and will have a Neighborhood Park Meet & Greet in August

On July 21, 2008, Councilmember Joseph Cho was invited to a neighborhood meeting, where he discussed Cerritos residents’ concerns. Approximately 20 neighbors expressed their concerns regarding health and safety issues along Shoemaker Avenue between Droxford Street and 183rd Street. This issue has been raised by many residents since development began on the Town Center two decades ago. Moreover, since Shoemaker Avenue was opened at South Street and an overpass over the 91 Freeway was built, these families can no longer enjoy quiet, peaceful, and relaxing evenings in their own backyards. Residents want the city to provide additional sound-reducing features to the existing boundary wall by increasing its height to eight-feet, which will reduce traffic noise, emissions soot and public safety concerns.

On July 26, 2008, Councilmember Cho sponsored a Cerritos Korean Community Round Table. Attendees included City of Cerritos Commissioners Chan Yong Kim, Nick Kim and Kenneth Cha, Committee member Chong Sup Yi, Cerritos College Board of Trustee member Tina Cho and over twenty representatives of Korean community organizations such as Cerritos Soccer Club, Hanmi Tennis Club, Easy Runners, Mid-Cities Korean American Realtors Association, Cerritos High School PTA, Mid Cities Golf Club, Ye Eun Academy, Etc. Attendees agreed that Korean-American residents should more actively participate in

the civic activities, and that the Korean Community Round Table will be held every other month.

Councilmember Cho believes that neighbors should work together to resolve issues and concerns, and that all property owners should be united and continuously communicate with staff and the Councilmembers. Working towards that goal, Cho will sponsor a neighborhood park meet and greet at Westgate Park on August 23, 2008 1:00 p.m. and invite Cerritos residents to enjoy Korean style B.B.Q while sharing their concerns in the West part of the City.
