March
for Good Jobs:
From Hollywood to the Docks
On April 15-17, 2008, workers along with members of the
community marched 28 miles from Hollywood to the docks of Los Angeles in
San Pedro. For three days straight, these workers and community
supporters walked and camped-out overnight along the route.
The march began in Hollywood (La Brea Tar Pits) on April 15th at 9:00
a.m. and concluded with a massive rally at the Port of Los Angeles on
April 17th at 6:00 p.m. Councilman Joseph Cho participated in the
kick-off ceremony and marched on Wilshire Boulevard from La Brea
Boulevard. to Western Avenue for three hours with Maria Elena Durazo,
Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of
Labor, AFL-CIO, State Senator Mark Ridley Thomas and other labor
leaders.
“The Fight for Good Jobs is vital because the American economy—and the
economy of L.A.—are beginning to look like an hourglass,” said Maria
Elena Durazo during the rally. “There are too few people at the very
top, a lot of people at the very bottom—and fewer and fewer in the
middle. We have to keep fighting for good jobs that sustain a middle
class standard of living because it’s the birthright of every American
worker.”
“I march because I know how challenging it can be to work without a
livable wage and benefits. From my experiences as an employee and
employer, I understand that investing in employees improves the quality
of services in the community. Good jobs are not only important for
labor. Good jobs are important in building strong families, communities
and a strong country,” said Councilman Joseph Cho, who started working
as a janitor and gas station attendant in Hollywood, when he first moved
his family to United States of America 34 years ago.
Hollywood to the Docks has come to symbolize the solidarity of working
people from different walks of life and represents over 350,000 workers
who will be fighting to stay in the middle class or move themselves out
of poverty this year.

Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's
event, is an overnight experience to bring together individuals who have
been affected by cancer. At the Relay, people from within the community
gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to
fight back against this disease. Relay participants help raise money and
awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving
mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. The event will have
participants taking turns running or walking laps and various activities
will be held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps.
Through the survivors' laps and the luminaria ceremony, people who have
faced cancer firsthand will be honored, and those who have been lost to
this disease will be remembered.
But, Relay isn't about taking laps -- it's
about coming together in the fight against cancer. It’s a time to
remember those lost to this disease and celebrate those who have
survived. It’s a place where people connect with others, share the
cancer experience, and find comfort and solace. And it's an opportunity
to build hope for a future where cancer no longer threatens the lives of
the people we love.
In 2007, we formed a team called, “Never Give Up” and participated in
the Relay. We want to continue again that same team spirit and help the
American Cancer Society to offer services and hope to people across the
country when they need it most. By joining together at the Relay, we
celebrate life, friendship, and an opportunity to work to defeat cancer
for future generations.
Sign up today to become a part of the “Never Give Up” team, and you too
can fight back against cancer. This link will take you directly to the
team page to join or to donate the money. We look forward to making a
difference in fighting back against cancer with your support.

Joseph Cho serves as a Director of the Consolidated
Youth Services Network, a Non-Profit Organization and testified for
AB2000 at the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee
Hearing
On April 24, 2008, Councilman Joseph Cho
becomes a Director of the Consolidated Youth Services Network.
Consolidated Youth Services Network is a non-profit community-based
organization that was founded in 1976 for the purpose of coordinating
programmatic diversion services for youth under the age of 18 years.
These services are provided free of charge and specifically target the
low-income/poverty level youth whose behavior has placed them “at-risk”
of becoming delinquent.
On April 30, 2008, Councilman Joseph Cho testified at the Assembly
Housing and Community Development Committee Hearing for AB2000 (Assemblymember
Tony Mendoza (D-Norwalk)) which allows the City to carry over its excess
housing units to the next planning period to make it easier to meet the
regional housing requirement (RHNA) at that time.
Councilman Cho explained two affordable housing projects which the City
of Cerritos completed or approved and the difficult situation which the
City is facing to satisfy its RHNA requirements. He told the Committee
“If the City is unable to construct the required number of affordable
housing units during the required planning period, the State applies the
balance of remaining units to the City’s next RHNA allocation. I feel
that in the same manner, the State should also credit the City for the
number of excess units constructed during a particular planning period
towards fulfilling its future RHNA requirements.”
Councilman Cho asked the Committee to support AB2000, which is a fair
and good solution to help Cities to comply with the RHNA requirement. At
the end of the hearing the Committee passed AB2000 by a vote of 5 to 0.
